The Favourite Word, ‘Nostalgic’!

Then comes the intensive longing for the past. Wherein you actually have to ask yourself, “Is this what they call ‘nostalgia’? Really? But, isn’t it supposed to be soothing? Isn’t it supposed to bring a big smile on my face? Then why is it breaking me down??” Perhaps, I’ll never find the answer to it. But yes, nostalgia is both placid and turbulent at the same time. And I don’t even know how is that possible?!

    1. Totally disagree. Nostalgia is for people who recognize the value of the past. I have nostalgic memories of my parents. Does that make me a loser? Hardly. Nostalgia has nothing to do with moving on or not, as that is simply a choice that we can make. To live in the past may be highly questionable, but nostalgia? It just means we have not forgotten. It means that we can still relish good memories. It means that we are not so wrapped in our own current feelings of self importance so we cannot enjoy events from our past. It means that we are human.

I’m glad you’ve shared your views. At least, now I won’t be ashamed of accepting the fact that I do feel nostalgic. Many a times! Thank you so much! It really means a lot.. 🙂

  1. Nostalgia (without looking it up in the dictionary) – to me – are feelings imbedded in particular moments of feeling and memory that you cannot conjure up at will. They just “happen.”

Happy times can trigger happy memories…but they turn sad, because they are…no more.

You can have nostalgic memories wherein feelings are mixed – a soup you’d like to dig into again, and nibble on the various items embedded in it (even the stuff you didn’t really like back then)…just to savor and remember tastes, aromas and textures…and what they each meant and mean…then and now…

Hm. Did I just overdo my comment?

    🙂

  2. Your memory is what you want to hold on to be it happy or sad,if this is the cloths you chose to wear that you should enjoy how you look, life is to short to get caught up into, happiness and sadness is a place to visit not to live just as you change your clothes
    It’s all good

  3. I love nostalgia. But its true fascination seems to be in the ability to revel in the happy moments of the past, and I think that that is where we look for reminders of what brought smiles to our innocence. This general sentimentality I think does have a tendency to romanticize certain events of our past, but as long as it doesn’t prevent us from moving forward, why not enjoy it, right?

True.. as long as it doesn’t have any negative effects on us, it’s totally fine to enjoy it! 😀

  5. To suddenly come to terms with how much we have changed since something happened in the past unrests me. But then again, that’s how we learn isn’t it?
