Dear Letter Daddy,
‘Letter-Daddy‘? Rings a bell? No? Okay! You may or may not have read this term anywhere else, before. (Even I haven’t!) But sure enough, I’ve read the term, ‘Letter-Daughter‘. Oh, you still didn’t get it? Fine. Look, I don’t know if you know this, I had a chapter once in English (subject), during my school days, based on the story of Anne Frank. In that text, they gave us a brief idea about the brief life of Anne Frank, her sister Margot, her parents Otto and Edith Frank and their fellow roommates during hiding. Post war period, many survivors of the Holocaust as well as others who were not even a bit affected by the war, but rather were quite disturbed in their lives, tried to seek some emotional help from Otto Frank. Of course, upon reading the words – which were not only beautiful but also strong and determined – of a 13 year old girl, people became inspired to talk to her father, Otto, the only survivor from their family. And so they did it. They corresponded with him via letters. And Otto was kind enough to reply to all of them! Later he couldn’t, due to some health issues. (Oh, how I wish I could have had a chat with him!) One of them (the people who wrote letters to Otto) was a girl/ woman who signed her letter as ‘Your Letter-Daughter’. Isn’t it lovely? ๐ So that’s where I found this term.
I first read the book, ‘Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Young Girl’ in 2012 and immediately wanted Anne as my best friend! But of course, this wasn’t possible. Later when I learnt about the correspondence of people along with Otto Frank, I started growing envious, because even this wasn’t possible for me, as Otto had passed away long before I was even born! But it was around that time that I grew fascinated by the idea of having a Letter-Daddy! I used to dream about how special would our relation be! In the course of time though, all these fantasies began to fade. I became more and more occupied with my studies and my life. I completely forgot about it all, until….
Until I found someone in this blogosphere! I found you! Yes, you!!! I know, this is an Open Letter. And the ‘you’ could relate to anyone. But there is someone out here, who has managed to rekindle the desire for a Letter-Daddy within me. The sparks have been ignited now. I think, it’s true, when the right person comes, you just know it. Maybe our sixth-sense works there.Yet, in today’s world of distrust, I don’t even think if such a father-daughter relationship could be possible. Paranoia is the evil which resides amongst all of us today. The devil that stops us from taking a step ahead. The devil which doesn’t allow us to take any risks! The devil which is within us and only we have the power to chuck it out; yet, we don’t throw him!!
I know we are never going to meet each other. Yet I’m glad to find someone like you. To all those who are reading this, I’m happy to have you all in my life. Thank you! ๐
Your Letter-Daughter,
Suri.
Cool!

What an interesting thought! Why put geographical limits on your “family”? Imagine how much you can learn from brothers, sisters, Moms and Dads in different countries;different climates; different cultures; different spiritual beliefs. You even have a large and wonderful dog called Ray as a pet in Canada!

Yes , it is evil and perilous world we’re living in….mistrust seems to be the only option we have….but do we realize and pause a moment to wonder…..there’s a little girl’s / child’s heart beating inside , yearning for trust and love?

It may seem outdated now but before this vast global interaction thanks to internet ,emails and much more , I used to have penpals. I had an amazing pen sister too and also a blood relative who I never met but we had regular interaction through postal letters. The waiting of their replies ,and the joy of seeing the post man and of course the pride of reading my name on the receivers end was just missing today . People just call or message or email but still I write letters and love to receive one too. The crisp fragrance of ink and paper in some ones own handwriting can tell a lot about that person and their feelings towards us. Aah and yes the dancing steps of receiving a love letter . I used to spray my favourite perfume in my diary and keep the letter in between meant for my hubby for a week or so before passing it to him . I have a treasure box of old letters which I keep really dear.
These typed texts just cant make it up to that level of immense pleasure . Hope you find this joy in your letter writing.

How crazy is this idea? Writing letters to your daughter whom you know hasn’t even born yet. You know you have no idea she will ever be there, neither do you know anything of her mother…just a voice inside that tells you she’s on her way into your life. I’ve been writing to her for sometime. My imaginary daughter, my best companion…
Am I crazy ?

Woww! That’s the coolest thing I’ve read in a while!! You’re not at all crazy. Instead, people like you- who thinks so deeply- are very rare these days. Carry on with your habit of writing the letters to your daughter! It’s really awesome. I like it!
Good luck! ๐

These words acted as a hailstorm on my lazy life. I got the answer to my long lasting confusion. I am my self spoiling my life no body is responsible only me . Now if i had spoiled my life then its my duty to make it better. Not to blame timeโฆ.
I will work hard now. Thanks a lot for this eye opener post. Always be happy, spread peace and love among each otherโฆโฆ..

this concept is beautiful.
um. so. this is what i do, i like the idea of emailing (even when texting is the THING). so, often i write my boyfriend emails about how things are in life, and how i am doing (with the condition) that he is not allowed to write back to me. your article reminded me of this thing. hope you find a beautiful association soon.
I dont know why but you remind me of my younger sister.
