Let’s Talk Astronomy Tonight!- Part 1

I’ve always enjoyed looking up and gazing at the sky, be it the day or the night sky. During my childhood days, I lived in the suburbs of Mumbai, where there was less light pollution than in the cities. And that meant clearer skies.

We lived in a bungalow, so I had the entire terrace to myself. I used to lie down and gaze into the night sky with my pet dog for company (Remember Sweety? I’ll link up the posts related to her here, if you want to know more about her: https://twinklespark.wordpress.com/category/dog-days/ ). I remember one day my mom told me about a meteor shower that was about to occur the next night. She read about it in a newspaper. I was so excited and couldn’t wait! When the time had come, I went up to the terrace, spread the mattress in its usual spot, lied down and waited. Nothing. My mom joined me after a while. After sometime she pointed at a shooting star, I missed it. She pointed at another one in a few minutes, this time I saw something pass by from the corner of my eye, but only a glimpse. There was nothing for a long time after that. Just as we were about to get up, I spotted a shooting star! Ah, I was so happy! That was the first time I had clearly noticed a shooting star. I was about 7 or 8. I remember how I was glad to have seen a shooting star, but dejected to (apparently) not having seen a meteor shower after waiting for so long! Maybe we were looking in the wrong direction? Or maybe I had imagined so much more- I used to think meteor showers were more like a visible, horrific attack of meteors and asteroids on the Earth!

When I was a little older, say 10 or so, there was news about how a crescent moon, Jupiter and one other planet I don’t remember which now (possibly Mars?), would be so close to each other and in such a pattern that these three together would be resembling a ‘smiling face’. I did observe it and grew so fascinated by this marvel of universe that I asked my mom to call up my cousin so that he could watch it too, from some other part of the city.

When I was 12, my parents got me an Encyclopaedia and I remember jumping directly to the Astronomy section first, reading and gulping down everything I could and then moving onto the other sections.

These were some of the earlier days about how I got interested in the study of astronomy. I’m planning to post my experiences related to this field in a form of a series. Would you like that, or do you prefer some other way? Do let me know.

Do you like gazing into the sky? Does the workings of the universe fascinate you as well?

Just Keep Running!

I step outside
Soak in the afternoon sun
Call out your name
You turn to look
And then start running to me
I hold you tight
Cry my heart out in your fur
Hug you and share with you
All the stories and the hurt
You are attentive
You understand my pain
You listen to me, as always
The terrible things I tell you about
The weird thoughts that I carry around
The fights, the misunderstandings,
The fears, the anguish
I tell you all, but you judge me not

You silently wink that it’ll be alright
As I weep softly with dry tears on my face
We both lay down on the floor,
You on your tummy, me on my back
But huddled together like there’s no room
You were, are and always will be
The best support system of my life.

Yes, it’s been years since we last met,
It’s been some years since you left the planet
But I hope you’re happy, wherever you are
I hope you have a big and wide open ground there
And nobody to stop you, from running around
Because, wasn’t that always your dream?
To run, run, eat and run?

You showed me, no matter what happens
We should never stop running
Feel the pain and double the pace
You were magic, the brightest light in my life
I miss you, but wait, don’t you worry
For I’ll always remember the good old days
To inspire me to run again
And not lay gasping for your presence
For it will only weaken my soul

I’ll run again, I’ll live your dream
And thus I’ll make it up to you
To the days that we’ve lost
To the times that we could have met, but didn’t.

I love you, Sweety.

Note: Here’s another poem dedicated to my dog, Sweety who passed away around 5 years ago.

Sweety’s Day One At Our House

Mid-March, 2002.

Around 8 p.m.

*Knock-knock*

“Moommmy..!! Somebody just knocked the door.”

“Oh, okay. Let me see, who is it…” – said my mom.

The door is opened.

Mom is at the door.

I’m peeping out from inside the house.

TaaDaaaa!! *SURPRISE*

On the other side of the door, stands a man – my dad’s friend – with a cane basket!!

So what?, you may ask. What’s so special about a ‘basket’?

The basket looked somewhat like this

The actual surprise is what lies inside the basket! Two jet-black puppies!!! German Shepherds, both of them (this I learnt later). You kidding? NO!! My mom and that man were engaged in some conversation. I was oblivious. The conversation could not be interpreted by me. Reason being: My entire Cerebrum and the Occipital lobe was focused on only one thing – The two black Canines in the cane basket!!

The next moment, before I knew it, one of them was set out, outside the basket. Run! Run!! Ruuunnnn!!! (This is what my subconscious mind was telling me to do). And so I did. I ran as fast as I could, with an enormous and huge (for a 5 year old me, of course) less than a foot* pup, tailing behind.

What if it pounces upon me? What if it uses it’s sharp, fierce and dangerous claws and rips my flesh off??! How do I escape from this huge giant?? – Were my thoughts then. Ah, Silly me!

Finally after a loooonng 10 seconds run, I had managed to climb up on a tall hill, which proved to be a life-saving deal.

Translation of the above sentence: I climbed on our bed in the bedroom. The bed was around 2 feet** high, the little, less fortunate pup (who was later named Sweety) couldn’t climb it. Thus, ended our race. Or maybe, just started? Of course. So many more adventures to come.

P.S.: Oh no. I forgot. You might be wondering who the other puppy was, along with Sweety, in the basket, right? Well well.. He was named Sheru. A male German Shepherd, and was adopted by the man who brought in Sweety and Sheru in our house, on the first day. Lovely, isn’t it? 🙂

* foot – 1 foot = 12 inches = 30.48 cm

** feet – plural for foot.

This is the earliest memory that I have of Sweety. Do you people remember the very first day with your dogs? If yes, then do not hesitate, type away and let us all hear about your wonderful stories!! *wink*

Dog Days!

Hello folks!

Today, I’m about to add a new page/tab to my site called “Dog Days”. On this page, I shall be sharing stories of my dog, Sweety (who, unfortunately, had departed from me some two years back). So, it’s going to be kind of an homage to her, as well as reminiscence of those good old days. Like, arousing the feelings of nostalgia! :’)

I usually don’t speak about her to anybody. Reason being, the thoughts then start nagging me. And they ask for complete and constant attention. Thoughts about, how wonderful were my days with her and all. Initially, it all goes well. But then, the thoughts that she’s no more with me, pulls me down. To the extent that it leaves me with no enthusiasm to participate in life and in day to day activities. I’ve spoken about her (Sweety) only to a couple of my close friends. So other than that, it’ll be the first time that I’m going to talk upon this so openly and will try to break-free from the small part of the shell that is covering me. I’m sure, it’s gonna be a heavenly experience, along with such awesome followers as you guys! Looking forward to it! 🙂 Starting next week, I’ll be posting here every other Saturday. Hope you’ll enjoy it!

Here’s her picture:

Hope you guys will hang on till the end. I take this moment to Thank You all for the support that you’ve been showing me till date! Thanks a ton! 🙂

P.S.: The idea of coming up with the title, “Dog Days” is entirely a coincidence to the fact that these are indeed dog days! 😛 (For those unaware of this term, dog days refers to the hottest days of summer of the year). Here, in the coastal regions of India, it feels as though I myself am actually frying in a pan!!

Love from a dog! <3

Dogs love us unconditionally.
You may find it hard to trust people; but with dogs, you don’t even have to think twice before entrusting them with your deepest secrets!
That’s the beauty of their souls. Their love. Their unconditional love.
If you haven’t yet experienced the love of a dog, then, I must say, you still have got no idea what “TRUE” love feels like..!
It’s a feeling that can never be explained. It’s truly heavenly!! *_* ❤
